GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.

Re-established in Spring 2004, the goal of this department is to develop a better understanding of contemporary issues related to the city and urbanism in Iran. The main activities of the Group are coordinated through a steering committee and an acting chair.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The articles published in the journal, as well as the activities undertaken by the Andisheh Iranshahr Project, are informed by five key principals or themes.

1.    The challenges facing cities and citizens in Iran in the 21st Century, such as sustainability, democracy and social justice, globalization and identity.

2.    The processes involved in the transformation of being a city resident (shahrnesheen) to a citizen (shahrvand).

3.    The production of urban knowledge – articles or research projects should be grounded in the historical, cultural and spatial context of Iranian cities and settlement spaces and add to the current stock of knowledge about urban issues in Iran.

4.    The approach should be multi-disciplinary and critical.

5.    Effective in influencing the nature of Iranian cities. The group aims to influence decision makers in government, educational and cultural institutions, professions associated with urban planning, management and research, as well as the wider society.
